Lovely (& Local) Spring Flowers and Plants

This week I am back at Wolvercote Community Market with a small selection of hardy perennials – some ready to plant now and others whose roots haven’t quite filled their pots, but will be ready in the next few weeks. I am bringing them to market this week as there’s quite a long gap before I am due to be back (April 26th). If you would like me to put anything aside for you to pick up at the market, please email:

Hardy Perennials & Foxgloves

These plants have been over wintered outside in pots or a nursery bed and are tough and ready to be planted out as long as the ground isn’t frozen. All have been grown from seed or cuttings in peat free compost. They are magnets for pollinating insects and will return bigger and better each year. Foxgloves are biennials and they will flower and then self seed so if they like your conditions they will come back and increase.

Knautia Melton Shades: a top favourite plant – it has waving wiry stems with truly lovely scabious pincushion flowers in a range of colours including claret burgundy, purple, soft dusky pink, white and blue. Very long flowering and lovely threaded through a border, it is much loved by butterflies and bees. 13cm/1 litre pots £4.00; 2 litre pots £6.50 and 3 litre pots £7.50

Eryngium Blue Glitter: another favourite which like knautia will flower this year. Covered in small blue thistles on branched electric blue stems, it adds height, beauty and lots of seasonal interest. Its flowers are loved by pollinators and its seeds provide Winter food for birds. 13cm/1 litre pots £4.00; 2 litre pots £6.50 and 3 litre pots £7.50

Foxglove Alba: loved by bees and pretty in a cottage style garden, foxgloves can be grown in shade and part shade where they shine. They will generously self seed if given the right conditions. These healthy plants are ready to be planted out. 13cm pots £3.00

Campanula Persicifolia Blue: a beautiful, wildlife friendly plant which looks delicate, but is extremely tough. It likes well drained soil, but flourishes in my clay soil where it is evergreen and clumps ups. Its flowers are a lovely violet blue and bloom from June through to August. It can grow up to 90cm but is shorter in my garden. It is a great cut flower and another reliable cottage garden favourite. 9cm pots £3.00 & 2 litre pots £6.50

Campanula takesimana (Korean bellflower): this unusual and reliable plant is another magnet for pollinators. It flowers from June to August and produces many extremely attractive pale pink bells on erect stems. It grows up to 60cm and can cope well in both sun and part shade. It is unfussy about soil type.

There will be other plants available at the market on Sunday.

Cut Flowers: Jam Jars & Pickle Pots

There will be a selection of fresh, bright Spring flowers with tulips, narcissi, anemones and blossom among the mix. Grown without use of pesticides with an organic approach close to the market.

Jam Jars (with at least 15 stems): £7.50

Pickle pots: £10.00

Bouquets: start at £15
