This Week’s Plants at Wolvercote Market

Apologies for the lateness of the newsletter. There will be a stall at tomorrow’s Wolvercote Community Market at the White Hart. No flowers this week as the tulips have almost finished and the peonies haven’t quite popped, but there will be perennials (both hardy and tender), annuals as well as the first of the tomatoes. More info below with images to help you see how they will look when they flower or fruit. If you would like me to put anything aside for you, please email me before 9.00am tomorrow morning.

All the plants have been grown by me from seed, division or cuttings in peat free compost. All of them are pollinator magnets as well as being lovely and reliable.

Perennials:

Apart from the salvias, these hardy perennials have been outside all Winter and have been completely hardened off and are ready to plant. The salvias have been out in the day and then protected from the very low temperatures at night which can knock them back a little.

The hardies:

9cm/13cm pot, £3.50; 1 litre pot, £4.00; 2 litre pot: £6.50 and 3 litre & above: £7.50

The tenders:

Salvia patens has one of the most unusual and beautiful blue flowers. Often classified as an annual it is perennial if Winter temperatures aren’t too brutal. They can be lifted and protected in Autumn, but mine were left outside in pots and have come back well. These plants will need a little protection at night over the next few weeks if temperatures continue to dip dramatically.

Annuals:

Cerinthe major: a great hardy annual which is very attractive to pollinators and a reliable self seeder which can tolerate most conditions. They have been hardened off and are ready to be planted out now. £2.00 a 9 cm pot.

Cerinthe major

Tomatoes

A delicious beefsteak tomato which is a favourite for its delicious flavour. Not yet hardened off, but could be planted out in a polytunnel or greenhouse.

Costoluto Fiorentino £1.75
